Is Organic Right for My Baby and Me?

As you begin introducing a wide spectrum of produce, grains, and protein into your little one’s diet, you will most likely have to answer the following question: “Is organic food the right choice for my family and me?”  Before you can answer that question, it’s important to understand what the term “organic” means.  According to Organic.org, organic produce and other ingredients are grown without the use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, genetically modified organisms, or ionizing radiation. And animals that produce meat, poultry, eggs or dairy do not take antibiotics or growth hormones.

Bambino’s nutritionists recommend that all your food come from organic sources, and here are a few reasons why:

Antibiotics

80% of the antibiotics sold in the United States are for livestock and poultry—not humans.  They are used in the animals’ food and water supply to stimulate growth and to mitigate the poor standards in which the animals are raised.  These antibiotics then get transferred to our bodies when we eat and digest meat, dairy, and eggs from non-organic animals. Overuse of antibiotics is directly linked to drug-resistant organisms and has been identified by the CDC as one of our most serious health threats.

Pesticides

Although conclusive evidence is still not available, some studies connect pesticide exposure to a myriad of developmental issues in children. Simply substituting your traditional produce for organic choices will limit your baby’s exposure to potentially harmful pesticide residue.

Animal Welfare & the Environment

Organic farmers allow their animals open pasture time, use environmentally responsible farming practices, and protect the surrounding wildlife from the harmful chemicals sprayed by non-organic farmers.   By supporting the efforts of organic farmers, you’re not only taking excellent care of your family’s health, but you are also supporting the overall health and wellness of livestock and the environment.
