Parenting Trends to Watch in 2016

As each new generation comes into their child-bearing years, the world of parenting makes a shift.  Just like fashion trends and math curriculums, parenting styles change and adapt over time.  Not only have parenting practices reacted to new technology, but other tried-and-true methods get left by the wayside.  Keep your eyes open for more of the following parenting trends as we move into the second half of 2016.
  1. Millennials wave “Bye-bye” to helicopter parenting.

Many millennials grew up with baby-boomer parents who micromanaged every aspect of their day. From soccer practice to ballet lessons and a Spanish tutor, Millennials grew up as the most scheduled generation of modern culture.  In response, Millennials have adopted a new parenting style and come with a more “hands-off” approach that includes more free play and downtime.

  1. No more spanking.

“Spare the rod and spoil the child” was a phrase originally seen in literature in Samuel Butler’s poem “Hudibras”. While spanking children may have been a popular form of discipline in the past, it’s losing its appeal among a newer generation of parents.  Some experts, such as Dr. Sears, take the stance that parents should try redirection or time-outs rather than use spanking as a form of discipline.

  1. 3. Technology = the new babysitter.

We’ve all seen it—two parents enjoying their dinner and conversation while the kiddos relax, iPad in hand, headphones covering their ears.  Although a little bit of technology doesn’t hurt, the American Academy of Pediatrics discourages exposure to too much TV, especially in children under two years old.  Instead of relying too heavily on technology, bringing coloring sheets and quiet games along can provide entertainment that promotes brain development.

  1. Breast is best.

If you haven’t already noticed, breastfeeding has come back into the social consciousness as the preferred way to feed your baby.  More mothers than ever are choosing to breastfeed to the recommended six-month mark, and many feel more comfortable feeding in public.
